Here are five tips for how to keep coffee fresh.

1. Store coffee in an airtight container

The first tip for keeping your coffee beans fresh is to store them in an airtight container. This will help keep out moisture and oxygen, both of which can degrade the flavor of the beans over time.

If possible, try to use a container made specifically for coffee beans, as it will have a tighter seal and help keep the beans fresher for longer.

2. Keep coffee away from heat and light

Heat and light are two of the biggest enemies of fresh coffee beans. Exposure to either can cause the beans to lose their flavor and become stale more quickly.

3. Grind your coffee just before brewing

Once you’ve ground your coffee beans, they start to lose their flavor and freshness almost immediately. So, it’s important to grind them just before brewing.

There are a number of different ways to do this, from using a manual burr grinder to an electric grinder. If you don’t have a grinder, you can also buy pre-ground coffee, but it’s always best to try and grind the beans yourself for the freshest cup of coffee possible.

4. Don’t freeze or refrigerate your coffee beans

Freezing or refrigerating your coffee beans can actually do more harm than good. It can cause the beans to lose their flavor and become dry and brittle. 

Or worse, your beans (or grounds) can get freezer burn. Although the jury is still about whether or not to freeze your coffee beans, we just suggest avoiding it. Instead, keep them in a cool, dark place like a pantry or cupboard instead.

5. Buy the freshest coffee beans possible

One of the best ways to ensure that your coffee is always fresh is to buy the freshest beans possible.

This might mean buying them from a local roaster or coffee shop instead of a grocery store. And, if you can, try to buy them in small batches so that you’re never storing old beans for too long.
